Step-By-Step Guide To Untethered Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 On iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, And Verizon iPhone As Well As Prepare iPhone For Unlock Using PwnageTool 4.2

Yesterday, the iPhone Dev Team released the PwnageTool 4.2 untethered jailbreak all iOS devices including the recently released Verizon iPhone 4.

Previously, we featured Limera1n and Greenpois0n (RC4, RC5, and RC6) jailbreak tool and procedures, but unlike other jailbreak tool, the PwnageTool is the only jailbreak tool (for Mac OS X) that has a capability to preserve the baseband of your iPhone and allow you to restore to a custom pre-jailbroken 4.2.1 ipsw, while still preserving your baseband so you can unlock your iPhone using UltraSnow carrier unlock.

Now we’re going to show the step-by-step guide to properly jailbreak the iOS on your iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G using PwnageTool 4.2.

As always, we just want to remind you that once an Apple devices is jailbroken, its warranty becomes void.

How To Untethered Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 As Well As Prepare An iPhone To Unlock Using PwnageTool 4.2

Step 1: Download iPhone Dev Team’s PwnageTool 4.2 from our iPhone Download Page. Make sure that your iPhone is running on iOS 4.2.1, or download the iOS 4.2.1 form this link. Load iTunes and sync your iDevice so you can backup. If you don’t want to backup with iTunes, you can do it manually.

Step 2: Launch PwnageTool. Click the “Expert” mode button and then select your iPhone. Click on the blue arrow to continue.

Step 3: Click on “Browse for IPSW” and then click on the blue arrow. A window will popup and you will need to select the firmware you downloaded in step 1.

Step 4: In the next window, you will need to select into several options. Click “General” and click the blue arrow to proceed in the next step.

• Under the same window you can choose to activate your iPhone. In the next screen adjust the size of the partition or leave as it is and click on continue.
• You should “activate” your iPhone if you are using an unofficial carrier and planning to unlock your iPhone.
• You don’t need to select “activate” if you have an iPhone legitimately activated on an official carrier (like AT&T in the US)
• You may need to increase the size of the root partition slightly. It is recommended to increase the size to about 695 MB. Click the blue arrow o continue.

Step 5: A Cydia Setting page will popup, hit the “download packages” tab, and hit refresh. This step will allow you to install any application that you want so when you restore your iPhone it will be packed with apps that you may use. Click the package you want to install and click “add to queue”. Click on the blue arrow to continue. All the apps you selected will be displayed in the “Select Packages” tab. Select OpenSSH as shown in the screen below. Ensure that everything is right and then click on the blue arrow to continue.

Step 7: Hit the “Build” and then click on the blue arrow to continue and start creating your custom firmware.

Step 8: The app will ask you where you want to save the custom firmware. It is advisable to save your IPSW on your desktop.

Step 9: Wait till the application successfully saved and built the custom firmware on your desktop.

Step 10: The PwnageTool will help you to put your iPhone into “DFU Mode”. Connect your iPhone to your computer turned ON and follow the onscreen instructions.

• Press and hold the power and home buttons for 10 seconds.
• Then release the power button and continue holding the home button for 10 seconds.

Step 11: When done, PwnageTool will tell you to go and restore in iTunes. Launch your iTunes (it will recognize a device in recovery mode), Click OK to continue. Hold the “Alt/Option” key and click “Restore” at the same time to restore your custom firmware. DO NOT click “Restore” without holding the “Alt/Option” key! A dialog box will pop up and you’ll be able to choose the custom IPSW file you created.

Step 12: iTunes will restore your iPhone using the customized iOS 4.2.1 firmware. Once done, the app will automatically reboot your iPhone.

That’s it you’re done! You can now enjoy your completely jailbroken iPhone. You can install UltraSnow via Cydia to unlock your iPhone.
